A WEST Cumbrian actress has shot into the big time and landed a leading role in a world premiere.

Lisa-Jayne Rattray will star next month in the long-awaited follow-up to the record-breaking musical Fame.

Although Barrow-born, Miss Rattray began her love affair with the theatre after moving to Haverigg and joining the Millom Amateur Operatic Society.

And after having starred in the group's production of the pantomime Aladdin, she has since gone on to appear inmusicals, concerts and productions across the country.

Her performance in Fame Forever — The Reunion in Glasgow next month is being eagerly anticipated. The original Fame is a global phenomenon. First came the hit movie, then the long-running television series, then the stage sensation in the 1990s.

Miss Rattray is playing Mabel Washington, one of the characters from the original production.

She said growing-up in Haverigg and taking part in musicals really gave her the bug.

Miss Rattray said: “It introduced me to the world of musical theatre and that was me hooked. I left home at 16 to be able to study musical theatre.”

Now aged 24 and teaching part-time on a musical theatre course, Miss Rattray is carving out a solid career.

But fame certainly hasn't gone to her head and she often visits her family who live in Haverigg.

Miss Rattray said: “I was delighted to get this part and to be involved with the world premiere of Fame Forever.

“It's a big step up and very high profile.

“My character Mabel is high energy, very excitable, warm and a little bit wacky — a bit like me actually — and I am really looking forward to the show.”

It premiers at the King's Theatre, Glasgow, on Thursday May 3 and will run until Saturday May 5.
