Boston University's Musical Theater, On Broadway Presents a Production of Fame

Boston University's premiere musical theater company, On Broadway, presents a full-scale production of Fame, a story set during the last years of New York City's High School of the Performing Arts. The show will open Friday, November 2 at 8:00 PM, with additional performances on Saturday, November 3 at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at BU's Tsai Performance Center (685 Commonwealth Avenue).

Attending opening night is David De Silva, creator of both the 1980 award-winning film Fame, and the musical. He said, "I am looking forward to attending the performance and presenting my soon to be published sequel to Fame, a story of reunion and rebirth entitled Forever Fame, to BU on Broadway for their consideration as a possible BU production in 2008. It is an original work with a great new score."

Director Kate Joyce (CAS '07, SPH '08) said, "David De Silva's presence and recognition a great honor. We are thrilled to be in the Tsai Performing Arts Center, and look forward to bringing such a vibrant, colorful musical to life." Brian Vaughan (CFA '11), is serving as the show's assistant director.

On Broadway's Fame features original choreography designed by Dorothy DiPascali (CAS '08) and Adanta Ahanonu (CGS '10), members of Boston University's Dance Theater Group. The cast of 26 represent numerous schools within BU and all class levels. The production also features a full orchestra, directed by Nicholas Foster (CFA '10) and comprised of BU instrumental performance students, as well as alumni.

Fame is a musical written by Jose Fernandez (book), Steve Margoshes (music) and Jacques Levy (lyrics), based on the award-winning 1980 movie directed by Alan Parker. The idea behind the movie and musical was conceived and developed by David De Silva. Set during the last years of New York City's celebrated High School for the Performing Arts on 46th Street (1980-1984), the story focuses on one class of acting, dance, and music students. The show follows the trials and tribulations of the students and teachers of dance, music, acting and literature, and explores conflicts of self, society and the struggle between the beauty of art and the practicality of academia.

Boston University On Broadway (OB) is BU's only musical theatre company and has been bringing quality musical theatre to the Boston University community and the city of Boston since 1994. OB has been dedicated to providing eclectic seasons comprised of Broadway classics (West Side Story, Chicago, Godspell) as well as innovative and edgy pieces (Rocky Horror Picture Show Live!, Bat Boy, The Last Five Years). In addition to outstanding productions, OB offers numerous opportunities for students to become involved in musical theatre, including the bi-annual cabaret event, BYOB: Bring Your Own Broadway.
