31st March, 2009

The Mullingar Student players are taking to the stage with the popular musical Fame! from Wednesday, April 15 to Saturday, April 18 in the Mullingar Arts Centre.

In its heyday, Fame was drawing a viewing audience of 600,000 in Ireland alone and was a must see for any teenager at the time.

Currently, the Student Players are putting a tremendous effort into making this a show one to remember, and judging by rehearsals, they certainly will live up to the concept that is Fame!

The 80's popularised the phenomenon that was the film and TV series Fame. Set in a New York school for the performing arts, the film directed by the great Alan Parker was an instant hit in much the same way as Grease had been in the 70's.

This was primarily because of its young cast and infectious music, as well as the great characters of Leroy, Bruno, Doris and Miss Sherman who went on to became household names.

NBC took the show to new heights when it turned it into a weekly product and in no time leg warmers had become the must-have fashion accessory. It became cool to dance and sing, with dance studios and acting schools springing up worldwide.

Then the musical followed which is really an amalgam of both the film and TV programme, containing many of the characters of both, even if there names are changed slightly.

The show won a Tony award in 1997 for Best New Musical and has been a staple with amateur and student productions ever since because of its popular appeal and catchy music.

There is no better time to get away from all the economic doom and gloom and go see this heartwarming show.

Tickets are available at the Arts Centre Box office in Mount Street, Mullingar or by calling 044 9347777.
