Huddersfield Amateur Operatic Society has two new faces

Dec 24 2010 by Val Javin, Huddersfield Daily Examiner

For the musical production team that is David Lockwood and Cathy Peters, 2011 looks like being a memorable year – even before it has started.

David is well known in the town’s amateur operatic circles as an actor who has played many principal roles.

Cathy is a former professional dancer who has used her skills to choreograph a string of musical successes in Huddersfield.

Both are delighted that having worked on a string of successful shows for Woodhouse Operatic Society, they have now been invited by Huddersfield Amateur Operatic Society to stage a big musical at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, one that hasn’t been seen before in the town.

They certainly have the experience between them to pull off an all-action production of Fame.

David made his first appearance in a musical with Woodhouse in a production of Desert Song in the Seventies.

In more recent years, he has proved to have quite a talent for directing shows. Now he is pleased to have been asked to direct another society he knows well, the Amateurs.

“I did nine shows with the Amateurs back in the 70s and 80s and returned to them in 2003 for a production of Kiss Me Kate,” said David.

Now he and Cathy will be shaping the company’s next production which will be at the LBT from November 8-12.

The show has a cast of 14 and David promises a full-scale production with plenty of big musical numbers.

He sees this directing first for the Amateurs as a challenge and is happy to have Cathy working alongside him.

The two have worked together on a string of successful shows for Woodhouse including Buddy Holly, Return To The Forbidden Planet and Footloose.

Gordon Balmforth will be the musical director.

Auditions are on Sunday, January 23 (between 1pm and 5pm) at United Reformed Church, Moldgreen. If you are interested call Elaine Walmsley, on Hudds 01484 319334.

Rehearsals start in the spring – after David has delivered his next big show, Little Shop Of Horrors for Woodhouse. That goes on at the LBT in the middle of March.
