Fame The Musical, New Theatre Cardiff: Review

An updated take on the cult 1980s film and tv series, Fame, this energetic musical hits all the right notes, busts all the best dance moves and showcases top-notch stage talent as we follow teens trying to break the big-time and their teachers in New York’s High School of Performing Arts.

There’s romance, comedy, fantastic choreography and dance, superb – sometimes-spine-tingling -singing mixed with a hard-hitting dose of realism as the story touches on issues such as race and drug abuse in a world where some hunger for fame at all costs.

While some of the audience may have been nostalgic Fame fans, others will have been wooed to the theatre to see some of the famous faces who took to the stage.

There’s Jorgie Porter as Iris, who performs both ballet and modern dance moves beautifully, Keith Jack as a ‘serious’ Nick, who was runner up in the BBC1 show ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and Mica Paris, no less, who had the crowd spellbound by her passionate rendition of ‘These are my Children’.

The rest of the cast were fantastic, too. Stephanie Rojas played a spectacular, troubled Carmen, with a touching fall from grace and a superb rendition of Fame – the song we all wanted to hear. Jamal Kane Crawford as student-with-attitude Tyrone had the whole audience whooping to his hip-hop moves in Dancin’ on the Sidewalk. Molly McGuire’s vocals were also stunning, along with her comic-timing as she throws herself at an uninterested Nick. Albey Brookes as sex-obsessed Joe brought plenty of light relief to the proceedings and Simon Anthony played a lovestruck, talented musician Schlomo perfectly, too.

The whole, super-talented ensemble filled the stage with positive energy . Straight A students all round. And top marks to the show. Go and see it.

Fame is at The New Theatre Cardiff until Saturday 29th September.
